The Sun Building at 280 Broadway, is located on the east side of Broadway between Chambers and Reade Streets. The former A.T. Stewart Store was one of the most influential buildings ever erected in New York City, as its style, materials, use, and location helped determine the course of architecture and commerce in the City. In 1846, Alexander Turney Stewart opened New York's first department store. As the first Italianate commercial building in New York, it established what would become the style of choice for hundreds of stores and warehouses erected through the succeeding decades. In 1917, the New York Sun Newspaper bought the building, giving it the name by which it is referred to today. The facade rehabilitate required hand selection of each marble component from marble quarry in Georgia. Marble columns, cornices, pilasters and capitals were custom made to match existing. Cast iron columns and decorative components were replicated and relpaced. The project was awarded a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award in 2020 by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
This facility consists of a four-story building built in 1908 and a three-story 1963 addition, together housing three schools. Lo Sardo General Contractors performed exterior restoration including replacement of the roof systems and entire parapet on the original building, with replacement in kind of all terra cotta tracery and copings; removal of the parapet at the southeast and southwest corners of the 1963 addition; and replacement of brick masonry, granite replacement and injection waterproofing at various locations. The Guastavino-tiled vault ceiling over the former main entrance is part of the restoration program. The project was awarded a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award in 2019 by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

Days to complete: 77 This two classroom, two bathroom 1,344 SF facility was designed and engineering to be the prototype modular classroom building for the entire NYC School System. The buildings design and specifications were approved by the NYC SCA and FID after a rigorous review and submittal process. Lo Sardo General Contractors Inc was awarded a 5 year contract to furnish these units throughout the five boroughs of the NYC School System.
Lo Sardo has delivered 14 of these TCU’s to date in both stand alone and back to back configuration as shown. Units were designed to provide additional classroom space for existing schools or to be clustered together to form stand alone schools. The open floor plan allows the SCA to convert the units to administrative space, nurses offices, etc. as needed at the different schools.
This facility was built to meet construction group 1-E non-combustible and rigid NYC building code, including mechanical and electrical equipment MEA certification. This is but one example of the over 100 Modular installations Lo Sardo has completed successfully over the last 20 years for the New York City School Construction Authority.
